Profile

After completing my Master’s in Biochemistry from MG University, Kerala, I joined CCMB, Hyderabad, for my PhD. My PhD thesis project was to understand how epigenetic modifications and chromatin dynamics regulate transcription by RNA polymerase III, using the SNR6 gene as a model. My Postdoctoral training was done at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, NIH, USA. During my stay at NIH, I discovered the mechanism of transcription termination by RNA Polymerase III. I have also discovered how transcription and port-transcriptional modification of tRNAs are linked in the fission yeast. After I joined the National Institute of Immunology as a staff scientist, I changed my focus to nutrition and metabolism. I started a program where my expertise in molecular biology and genomics is used to address questions related to malnutrition and metabolism. Currently, we combine physiology, molecular biology, and genomics to study the long-term effects of malnutrition.

Current Focus Areas

  • Malnutrition is a major healthcare problem that affects the entire human population. Both undernutrition and overnutrition pose significant risks for cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. My focus is to understand how malnutrition causes long-term metabolic defects in order to develop nutritional strategies (precision nutrition) to prevent the onset of metabolic disorders.
