Profile

I have been trained as cell and molecular biologist and subsequently gained expertise in genomics and epigenomics. Major focus of our ‘Molecular Gastroenterology Laboratory’ is to understand the underlying genetic and epigenetic basis of development and progression of chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. We have a special interest on noncoding RNAs and RNA Binding proteins and we do assess their involvement in the process. The broad objective is to identify key genes/ pathways which could function as potential therapeutic target and to find out non-invasive biomarkers for diagnostic and prognostic importance. We use genomic techniques to identify global changes in patient samples during the disease and subsequently use functional tools to interrogate the biological implications of these changes. We have identified a tumour-based gene signature capable of predicting malignant pancreatic disease and we are hopeful that our future endeavours will also contribute to the better management of pancreatic diseases.

Current Focus Areas

  • Elucidate genetic changes which could explain the development of Chronic Pancreatitis and also finding out the mechanism of alcohol mediated injury of pancreas during the progression of alcoholic chronic pancreatitis (ACP).

  • Pursue comprehensive analysis and integration of transcriptome, methylome and proteome data and functional characterization of key leads to have a mechanistic idea of development of PDAC from chronic inflammatory disease of the pancreas. We plan to evaluate which among the key genes/ pathways are possible therapeutic targets.

  • To identify key genes and pathways involved in pancreatic cancer desmoplasia and metastasis and to establish exosomal vesicle derived protein or RNA based secretory biomarkers for pancreatic cancer metastasis. Exploring the involvement of RNA modifications- Readers/ Erasers in the processes.

  • Focus on the role of noncoding RNAs (miRNA, piRNA, long noncoding RNA, circular RNA) in development and progression of chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer with special emphasis to explore their role as non-invasive diagnostic or prognostic biomarker.

  • We are also investigating the genetic and epigenetic underpinnings of Young Onset Sporadic Colorectal Cancer in Indian population. Role of long noncoding RNAs mediating the disease development and comparison of total transcriptome & proteome to predict the aggressiveness will also be explored.
