Profile

Nagendra Hegde obtained Bachelors in Veterinary Science, Masters in Veterinary Microbiology and Public Health, PhD in Veterinary Immunology, and post-doctoral training in virology and cell biology. He worked for a decade at Bharat Biotech Foundation, Hyderabad, before joining the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology, Hyderabad, in April 2017. His research experience spans veterinary and human virology, immunology and microbiology. His interests are to understand the epidemiology, genomics, and biology of viral and bacterial diseases, and to devise protective measures for these diseases. He has worked on bovine and major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and cell-mediated immunity (CMI), herpes virus immune evasion, adenovirus vectored vaccines, epidemiology molecular typing and genomics of bluetongue virus and bovine mastitis-associated staphylococci. He contributed to vaccine development at Bharat Biotech during his tenure there. He has recently embarked on One Health, working on anti-microbial resistance (AMR) and zoonotic diseases.

Current Focus Areas

  • Understanding bovine mastitis-associated staphylococci: species, antibiotic susceptibility, alternatives to antibiotics, biofilm formation, anti-biofilm compounds

  • Rhabdoviruses: reverse genetics, virus-cell interactions, vaccines, diagnostics, epidemiology, phytogeography, prevention and control, potential antivirals

  • Bluetongue: virus-cell interaction, tropism
