Role of bio based chemicals and enzymes in sustainable development.

Picture this, a grey day, all the vehicles on the planet have haulted in the middle of the roads due to absolute depletion of fuels. There is darkness all around as there is no coal left to be burnt to produce electricity. People are lying on their death beds as doctors are excavating microplastics from any and every corner of their bodies. Well this imagination is soon going to the reality if we do not mend our ways of living.

Today when the world is on the verge of mounting environmental concerns and finite fossil fuels reserves, the chemical industry is undergoing a paradigm shift towards sustainability, offering promising solutions that are both eco friendly and cost efficient.

Bio based chemicals are derived from renewable sources rather than from fossil fuels and majorly include biofuels and bioplastics. Biofuels like ethanol and biodiesel are produced from organic materials like corn, sugarcane, and algae, which are renewable and have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emission and are a great alternative to the traditional fuels currently in use.

Bioplastics on the other hand, are obtained from cornstarch or sugarcane. They offer an alternative to conventional plastics, which are petroleum-based and are a massive contributor to environmental pollution. Bioplastics, though still facing challenges in terms of production and degradation costs, present a more sustainable option.

Bioenzymes are instrumental in industries such as pharmaceuticals, food processing and agriculture. In pharmaceuticals, they are used for drug development and production. They have the ability to synthesize complex molecules with high precision, reducing the need for harsh chemicals.

Enzymes are profusely used in food processing to enhance shelf life, flavour and texture. For instance, amylases break down starches in baking, while proteases tenderise meat products. These applications contribute to more efficient food production and reduced food waste.

For agricultural use, bioenzymes such a cellulases and proteases are used to enhance soil quality and promote plant growth. They assist in the decomposition of organic matter as well. Additionally, enzymes can aid in the development of bio based fertilizers and pest control methods.

By offering renewable alternative to conventional petrochemical products and improving industrial processes, bio based chemicals and enzymes contribute significantly to environmental protection and resource conservation. While challenges remain, the ongoing innovations and supportive policies hold the potential to unlock the full benefits of these bio based soulution, carving the path for a more sustainable future.
